Health and Wellness Advice for Working at a Desk

There are a lot more people working at desks than there have ever been before. Whether you spend eight hours or even more sitting at a desk each day or you only occasionally use one, sitting at a desk for long periods can be bad for your health. You might be hunched over a drafting table or staring at a screen for hours each day, and it can lead to a range of issues, both physical and mental. When you work at a desk, a few techniques can help you to stay healthy and work on your wellness for a happier desk life.

Stretch to Deal with Tension

Working at a desk necessitates spending a long time sitting down. Even if you try to maintain a good posture, it can also mean you're often bending over, or just sitting in the same position. It can cause tension in your neck and shoulders, as well as elsewhere, and other aches and pains. Regular stretching can help you to work out any tension that you have that builds up over the day or week. Yoga is a good idea, and it delivers a range of other health benefits. However, there are other stretches that can be helpful too.

Take Care of Your Hands and Wrists

Your hands and wrists can suffer if you're a desk worker, whether you spend all day typing, drawing or just using a mouse. The right typing position can help you to protect your wrists when you work at a computer. It's also smart to take regular breaks to give your hands and wrists a break. Some people find that regular appointments with an orthopaedic physician can help them, especially when dealing with issues such as carpal tunnel syndrome. Although wrist rests are available, experts often recommend not using them.

Maintain Good Posture

The right posture at your desk can help to prevent a number of problems. There are a few things that you can do to sit in a healthy way. A good chair will help you to support your back. It should also be adjustable so that you can adjust the height and your arms and wrists can be parallel with the floor. A footrest can be useful if you feel that you need the extra support, otherwise your feet should be on the floor. If you are using a screen, it should be at eye level.

Remember to Leave Your Desk

When you work at a desk, regular breaks are important to reset both your body and mind. Leaving your desk allows you to take some time away from your work, perhaps get some physical exercise and maybe socialize with others too. Although you can get sucked into your work, you should still try to take breaks so that you don't spend all day at your desk. You might also like to try using an adjustable standing desk if you just want a change during the day.

Stay healthy when you work at a desk for better personal wellness and a happier life at work.
