4 Home Remedies to Help Relieve Flu Symptoms

Despite winter being over, the seasonal flu is still in full swing. Obviously trying your best to keep your immune system at its best is the best course of action. But if you find yourself down and out with the flu, there are a number of steps that you can take to help relieve flu symptoms. Here are four things that you can try in the comfort of your own home to help yourself feel better and to get back on your feet quickly.

Drink Plenty of Fluids

Fluids are a key element in the fight against the flu. Fluids help to keep the entire respiratory system hydrated. Proper hydration will turn the thick mucus that is common with the flu into a thinner substance that you can cough up and spit out more easily. Your fluid intake does not have to be limited to water. Juice, sports drinks, and chicken broth will also work to replace lost fluids and get you on the road to recovery.

Take a Hot Bath

A hot bath is not only relaxing, but it also can help you feel better. The steam from a hot bath or spa opens your pores and encourages sweat, which can have a detoxifying effect on your body. By sweating out the toxins, your body's immune system will be kicked into high gear. Sitting in a hot steamy bathroom can work the same as a hot bath.

Run the Humidifier

A dry home can be a hindrance in getting over the flu quickly. A cool mist humidifier or vaporizer helps to ease cough and congestion. By alleviating these symptoms, your body will be better able to fight the infection. Be sure to clean the device so that it does not harbor mold. This will only exacerbate the situation.

Salt Water

Gargling with salt water is an easy way to speed the recovery process. Simply stir 1/4 of a teaspoon of salt into one cup of warm water. Take a sip of the water, tilt your head back, and gargle for about 30 seconds before spitting it out. Repeat this until all of the salt water is gone. Gargling with salt water can reduce a variety of flu symptoms, including sore throat and nasal congestion. The most important thing to remember when fighting the flu is to rest. With the proper rest combined with any of the steps above, you will put yourself in the position to most effectively battle the flu.
