How to Stay Healthy When Moving

Your health should always be a priority, no matter what you are doing or intend to do. Life's events and circumstances should not be used as an excuse to hurt or ill-treat yourself (even if it's unintentional). After all, without your health, everything else in life becomes impossible, or at the very least, very difficult.

Moving is considered one of the most stressful things someone can willingly (or occasionally involuntarily, of course) do. Therefore it stands to reason that your health may suffer during this time. It doesn't have to, and it shouldn't. Here are three helpful hints to help you remain as healthy as possible throughout a stressful event like moving.

Eat

The first thing you should remember for your health during a move is to eat. I'm not even suggesting you should eat healthily (though, ideally, you should); I'm just saying you shouldn't forget to eat, even if you're very busy or worried and therefore have less of an appetite.

Make sure you have a nutritious breakfast the morning of your move. This will help your mind concentrate as well as make you physically strong; moving boxes is hard work, and your brain has to be engaged to help guide everyone who is assisting you, such as removal experts and friends.

Set up some snacks for when you feel your focus slipping, and try to stop for a full lunch if at all feasible. When you're finished, instead of retiring to bed early because you're weary, eat supper. It can be as simple as toast, a microwaved meal, or ordering takeout, but eating is essential since you need to maintain your strength.

Keep Hydrated

When you're busy and worried, it's easy to forget to eat, as I've said. It's also easy to forget to drink enough. This can even make you feel worse than skipping a meal since dehydration causes a severe headache, sluggish movements, and 'brain fog,' making it difficult to think properly.

It's critical to have a bottle of water on hand at all times. Sip on it throughout the day to stay hydrated, and you'll be able to go for much longer than you could without it. It may also help you avoid hunger, so if you really need to go longer between meals, drinking enough water will help you minimize your hunger pangs and keep functioning.

Lifting Techniques

It would be awful to carry a big box of your belongings improperly and injure your back, neck, knees, or anything else. If you do this, you will not only be in agony, but you may be unable to assist with the remainder of the move, and you may even need long-term treatment from a doctor or chiropractic care. None of this will be pleasant, but it can all be prevented if you are careful and lift anything – heavy or light – correctly.

To lift correctly, you should:

  • Maintain a straight back

  • Bring your knees together (never bend over at the waist)

  • Have a firm grip (wear gloves if need be)

  • Keep things near to your midsection

  • Take your time

Practice these lifting methods ahead of time to ensure that you get it right on moving day. Remember not to carry very large things by yourself; instead, enlist the help of friends, relatives, or professional movers. Although this will cost money, it will help the move go much more quickly and smoothly, and there will be much less risk of harm.
